RIT’s Participation in the Development Conference “Ionian Islands: Progress and Development Goals”

The General Director of the Research Institute for Tourism (RIT), Professor George Petrakos, participated as an invited speaker at the Development Conference titled “Ionian Islands: Progress and Development Goals.” The Conference was organized by the Regional Development Fund and the Special Managing Authority of the Ionian Islands, under the auspices of the Ionian University, and was held in Corfu on October 17–18, 2025.

Professor Petrakos took part in the session “Sustainable Tourism,” chaired by Ms. Christina Tetradi, General Secretary of RIT and Vice President of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (HCH).

In his presentation, titled “Sustainable Hospitality: Key Indicators and Challenges in the Greek Hotel Sector,” Professor Petrakos presented comparative data from RIT’s annual ESG sustainability survey for Greece and the Region of the Ionian Islands, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for the hotel sector in its transition toward a more sustainable development model.

Sustainable Hospitality: Key Indicators and Challenges in the Greek Hotel Sector , the Case of the Ionian Islands
The presentation of the General Director of the Research Institute for Tourism (RIT), Professor George Petrakos, is based on the findings of RIT’s 2024 ESG Sustainability Survey and focuses on the sustainable operation of Greek hotels, providing comparative data between Greece as a whole and the Region of the Ionian Islands. It analyzes investment trends, technological practices, and environmental awareness initiatives, as well as the main challenges faced by hotels in their transition toward a more sustainable hospitality model. The presentation also introduces the four energy management groups identified through data analysis. This presentation takes place shortly after the launch of RIT’s 2025 ESG Sustainability Survey (October 17, 2025), which will update the sustainability indicators of the hotel sector and highlight the adaptation dynamics of Greek hotels to modern sustainability requirements and challenges.
